Holidays 2003

We participated in the Lincoln, California holiday parade as a group. This parade also served to celebrate our ability to drive our LSVs into and around the town. We also had a group luncheon at Il Fornaio in December.

Del Webb Sun City 5th Anniversary

Fifteen Groups were asked to occupy a model home and inform prospective residents and current residents of their purpose and activities. The LSV Group is a "garage" Group, so we occupied a home with a cart garage and spent our time on the "street". We had a sampling of various types of LSV's, displays, literature and many Group members to answer questions. One gentleman suffered from a stroke and had not driven in a number of years. After sitting in a couple of vehicles, I believe he could learn to drive an LSV and have mobility within our community` with a restricted driver's license. Many Group members attended and a Good, Informative time was had by all.

Pizza Lunch 3-29-04

Approximately 30 LSV group members met for lunch at the Round Table Pizza Parlor, after caravaning from the lodge. Everyone seemed to have a good time meeting new people and talking to old friends.

2005 Gem Introduction 4-31/04

The Launch of 2005 GEM's occurred at the State Capitol in Sacramento on March 31, 2004. Richard Kasper, President and COO presided over the event. The body of the vehicle stayed the same however numerous "under body" improvements have improved the preformance of the GEM. Several memebers of our group attended.

River Cats Game 5/10/04

Eighteen members of the LSV Group caravaned to Sacramento for a River Cats Baseball game (this time we used our gas powered vehicles). The tickets were complimates of Harry Lookwood of Future Ford in Roseville, CA. Harry and his staff maintain our Ford THINK'S. It was a beautiful, sunny day and the River Cats won the game 4 - 1. (photos are posted in the 'Photo Gallery')

First Rally 5/23/04

If you saw LSV's zigging and zagging on the streets of Lincoln Hills, it's because our May 23rd Hound and Hare Rally was not only fun and adventurous, but created alot of laughs!

19 vehicles participated and all agreed that as a first effort rally for our group, it definitely is something we enjoyed doing and should be held again. Following the Rally we met at the Lincoln Hills Town Center Round Table Pizza for a no-host dinner in a reserved room for our group, shared our driving experiences and had drawings for prizes.

The main prize was quite spectacular as Future Ford of Roseville donated an automotive sensor to be added to your car, with all labor included. Gerry Lammerding was the lucky winner. As the owner of 5 cars, it might be a big decision for him to decide which one to add this new option. Harry Maker and his very efficient team players did a wonderful job of the organization of this event. We plan to do more of this in the future, but next time it will be a bit more challenging! Keep tuned....

Think Owners Clinic

Harry Lockwood and his staff of Future Ford of Roseville performed a 12 POINT CHECK of the Ford THINK at NO COST to our Think group owners. If you were one of the lucky ones to have realized this unusual and generous service, you would agree they did the work in a professional manner with efficiency. Minor repairs were done in the 30 minute check allotted to each vehicle.

The list of items that were checked were: Brake System Check and Adjust; Brake Fluid Check; Battery Pack Cable Check; Battery Condition and Charger Operation; Exterior Lighting and Horn Check; Tire Air Pressure Check; Motor Controller Connection Check and Lube; Reseal DC to DC Connector; Wire Harness Connector Check; Safety Restraint System Check; Diagnostic Code Check; Windshield and Washer Check.

Would you not agree they were most generous with their time and work performed for our group at no cost to us?

Thanks to the generosity of Duncan Automotive in Lincoln, we used their parking lot to perform this Clinic, and we have expressed our appreciation to them by written letter and verbally.

July 4, 2004

"Let Freedom Ring", and the bells were ringing, horns blowing, music echoing throughout the City and our happy LSV Group drivers enjoyed being part of this community's annual 4th of July Parade. The children got their share of candy as we proceeded along the parade route from our group. Each LSV was decorated in a patriotic theme and our members are getting more creative with each passing parade! Thanks to Diane Maker and Audrey Gibert for coordinating this event - a job well done. See our pictures of the parade at the July 20 membership meeting.

GEM Owners Clinic

A GEM Service Clinic was conducted on Saturday, August 28, 2004 in the Duncan's Automotive parking lot in Lincoln, California. Neil Duncan, manager, was a gracious host and provided us with all the necessities to make it an enjoyable day. Neil provided us with coupons for service and repair work on our "other" vehicles.

Twenty-five GEMs received a 25-point service inspection by the GEM Service Technicians, Dana and Doug. Dave Gannon, Director of Service, flew in from Fargo, North Dakota to be a part of the event. Dave provided answers to our questions and provided us with "tips" to keep our LSVs in tip-top condition.

Chris LeBlanc, District Sales Manger, joined us to tell us about the GEM accessories that were displayed and available for purchase at a substantial discount. Chris was also thoughtful enough to provide us with donuts and lots of COLD water on the 100+ degree day.

Victor Westerling of Elk Grove Dodge brought a 2005 GEM for us to test drive for the day. Victor also explained all the new features of the 2005 model. Victor can be reached at 916-405-2600 or 916-479-3131 if you have questions or would like to purchase a new GEM. He has them in stock !

THANK YOU - GEM for making this a very successfull event for the Lincoln Hill LSV Group. And THANK YOU - Duncan's Automotive for providing the use of your facilities to conduct this event. And THANK YOU to all the GEM owners who participated, for being on time for your appointment, and for being patient on such a warm day.

RIDDLE RALLY

ANOTHER ‘SUPER’ EVENT HELD BY THE LINCOLN HILLS LSV GROUP SEPTEMBER 26, 2004

Do you remember the Walt Disney film that had the song and expression ‘Supercalifragalisticexpialidocious’?

That describes Sunday’s Riddle Rallye for an afternoon of challenge, fun, great food and outstanding fellowship. There were 35 riddles, with three clues to each riddle, so you had lots of choices in solving the riddle and then figuring out your logistics as to which village you would drive to, and then finding the house noted as part of the riddle.

A point count system was given for every part of your riddle, plus time it took to complete as many of the riddles as possible. Yes, it was a challenge, but everyone was up to it. And in the allotted time of under one hour to complete what you had, it was encouraging to see such enthusiasm and ‘drive’ from the participants. Lots of laughs, comparisons of riddles and sighs of relief followed upon their return.

Following the Rallye, our Board and Standing Committee members hosted a delicious Sunday supper that featured make-your-own sandwich cold cuts of turkey, ham, salami, cheddar and American cheese; plus pickles, potato salad, four bean salad, chips, soft drinks, coffee and chocolate/marble cake. A pretty special combination of goodies for our participants.

Our prize winners of Home Depot gift certificates were Ted and Kathy Klakoff with the highest score, and Norton and Sandy Melnick coming in second.

This event would not have occurred had we not had a marvelous committee working in the planning and implementation of each aspect of the Rallye, for YOUR enjoyment. Master Rallye Planner, Harry Maker; Darlene Grey, his assistant; Diane Maker and Audrey Gibert for their catering expertise, and Joy Cole for always being there to set up and clean up. You people are an integral part of what makes our group a success. “THANK YOU” FOR YOUR EFFORTS AND THOUGHTFULNESS.

How do you measure the success of an event? Have you ever figured that one out? It is a simple statement! When your participants ask ‘when can we do this again’ as they are about to leave the group, you know they had a good time. And we had many who asked ‘when can we do this again’…….

Rail Road Museum Trip

It was a rainy day on Wednesday, November 3rd, and the spirits of our group were extremely high as we visited the Old Sacramento Railroad Museum.

Memories of the song 'On the Athchison, Topeka and Santa Fe' echoed in my ear as we strolled among the fabulous collection of restored trains in the halls of the outstanding Railroad Museum. The 24 LSV'ers had a fine time on this day trip and affirmed what an educational and interesting visit this was. Plus the fellowship that was obvious as we talked, laughed and strolled to view the many trains and other displays.

The second floor of the Museum has a special showing of miniature trains and other memorabilia of yesterday, and was very reflective of what an improvement has been made at this museum for the visitor's viewing. The Video Theater was a treat , and a fine way to start your tour, giving the history of the development of this transportation system for our country, and how it influenced the development of California and the West. Exhibits are designed for self--touring.

With the 20 restored locomotives one could tour a dining car to see the china table settings for each train in the rail system; the Railway Post Office, and hear the explanation by a docent of how the mail was sorted and distributed; walk through a Pullman-style sleeping car to see the bunks and beds; and so much more. It was a 'classroom experience'. This museum visit is an excellent 'family' type of outing and when friends come to visit in the Sacramento region. Admission rates are quite reasonable. It was a pleasant surprise to see what has been offered for the enjoyment of Northern California residents in their own backyard.

Holiday Dinner - 2004

CHRISTMAS BELLS WERE RINGING

44 of our LSV Group members enjoyed an evening together on December 7th at the Buonaratti’s Lincoln Restaurant for dinner heralding in the Christmas Season. The gals dressed in their festive Christmas theme outfits, tasty food was served by friendly and efficient servers, and the holiday spirit of fellowship and appreciation of each other prevailed. A special gift placed at each dinner setting was a Santa or Snowman coffee mug for each person to take home. It was a special touch to the table settings. We need to thank DIANE MAKER for her dedication and work in the arrangements for this party and its huge success, and made it a party to remember.

SCLH Anniversary - 2005

February 12 and 13, 2005, was the 6th Anniversary of the Lincoln Hills development. The LSV Group was on of the groups invited to occupy one of the 15 model homes to "show off" what the group does in this active-adult community. Many members brought there LSVs and answered questions from prospective and existing residents and also provided test rides, brochures, and demo video of the vehicles.

Ice Cream Social - 2/8/2005

February 2005 was a good time for the LSV Group to get together for an Ice Cream Social. Approximately 50 members gathered at the new Kilaga Springs Lodge for ice cream, board games and just plain "talk". A lot of laughter and getting to know members took place. Thanks to the Social Committee and all others that made the event possible.

Treasure Hunt Rally - 5/15/05

At 11:30AM, LSV Group President Bob Nawman, Secretary-Treasurer Lillian Nawman, Food Committee Chairman Diane Maker, Rally Committee members Darlene Gray, Norton and Sandy Melnick, and Rally Master Harry Maker met and set up for the event.

Including committee members, thirty two of our members gathered at the Sports Pavilion at 12:30 PM for our Pot Luck Luncheon and Treasure Hunt Rally. Of that group, 27 were contestants and five were members of the Food Committee and the Rally Committee who did not compete. After having a great lunch the 12 teams of contestants departed the Sports Pavilion promptly at 1:30 PM and were due back at 3:00PM. All but one team returned within a few minutes of the 3:00PM deadline. One team, Judy Trokey's team, made in back with less than a minute to spare of the 15 minute overtime deadline. Our Judy is a serious competitor and can always be expected to push deadlines and limits to the edge, but her competitiveness usually pays off so you can never fault her efforts.

After everyone tallied their score sheets and turned them in to the Rally Committee, the top five point winners had their treasure bags checked and point score confirmed by one of the Rally committee members.

The top five scorers were:

With a score of 630 points, the Gerry Lamerding team won top honors.(and a $20.00 gift certificate to Buonarroti Ristorante)
With a score of 600 points, Hank and Glenda Cobb took second place. (and a $15.00 gift certificate to Awful Annie's Restaurant)
With a score of 590 points, Judy trokey's team placed third. (and a gift certificate for two free lunch's at the Pantry Gourmet Deli)
With a score of 540 points, Bobby and Bonnie Swain latched onto forth place. (and a LSV GROUP monogrammed tote bag)
And the last of the top five contestants, with a score of 530 points, Don and Ruth Bayers took fifth place. (and their prize was a bottle of Meridian Merlot Wine)

Everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves and ended the day, even though it had started raining, smiling from ear to ear. Speaking for my wife Diane, the Food Committee chairman and her volunteers, and for my Rally Committee volunteers, all those smiles is why all of us enjoy planning and working on these events.

A special thanks to all you members and the terrific selection of food you brought to our Pot Luck Luncheon, as you saw for yourselves, everyone really enjoyed the luncheon.

September 18th is our next scheduled LSV Group Rally and that will probably be a Hound and Hare Rally although the jury is still out about doing another Riddle Rally.

GEM Maintenance Clinic 6/4/2005

The LSV Group of Lincoln Hills held its 2nd Annual GEM Service Clinic on Saturday, June 4, 2005 at Duncan's Automotive (Parking Lot) in Lincoln, CA. This year GEM provided four GEM Service Technicians to perform a 21-point inspection on our 40+ GEMs that attended the Service Clinic. Dave Ganon, Director of Service, from Fargo, North Dakota flew in for the day to oversee the inspection program and answer any questions GEM owners or want-a-be GEM owners had on maintenance issues. Chris LeBlanc, District Sales Manager for GEM filled in for Eric Burmeister, the District Sales Manager for Northern California and the Northwest who could not attend due a death in the family.
Victor Westerling of Elk Grove Dodge trailered a 2005 2-seater to the event for test drives and viewing. The GEM Team also brought a trailer full of accessories to purchase which included battery filler systems, wheels and tires, scuff guards, stereos. Each participant received a GEM Coffee Mug and a chance to win a GEM Cart Cover. The winner of the Cart Cover drawing will be announced at the next LSV Group meeting on June 21.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the inspection Service Clinic, especially the GEM Team and Neil Duncan of Duncan Automotive.

THE CASTLE IN THE SKY!

It was a bunch of hale and hardy folks who walked throughout the Thunderbird Lodge on Thursday, June 23rd for this day trip. The blue hues of Lake Tahoe glistened as we observed the views from every possible site throughout the Lodge, and the docent tour interesting and most educational. There were many, many steps to tackle throughout the property, but not a single complaint came from our group. We proved we had an adventurous, curious and uplifted spirit while we discovered this extravagant world of elegance.

The three story waterfall cascaded past the granite boulders in front of the Lodge, the six hundred foot long tunnel led to the boat dock. There was no expense spared in the construction of the Lodge, and the architecture of the buildings beautiful and unique, with stone pathways throughout the properties winding along at water’s edge.

Our stop at the Donner State Park and Museum for lunch and a tour, prior to the visit at Thunderbird Lodge, proved to be a nice break from the bus journey, where time was allowed to view the Donner Party Memorial statue, watch the video on the Donner Party story and walk throughout the Museum.

Homeward Bound we stopped at Truckee for a tasty dinner, and en route sang “For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow” to our bus driver, Tom; and to Gerry Lammerding for his good work in planning this day trip. It was a day of breathtaking views, laughter, good food and fellowship.

Lincoln Parade July 4, 2005

Members of the LSV Group participated in the July 4th (2005) parade in Lincoln, California. We put our best foot forward, with beautifully decorated carts. Upon passing the viewing stand, the Master of Ceremonies gave a brief explanation of what a Low Speed Vehicle is and the activities of the LSV Group. Hopefully more people will take an interest and understanding in our vehicles.
Lincoln Councilmember Kent Nakata requested to be driven in the parade in a Low Speed Vehicle. This request was accommodated. Great exposure and support for our vehicles by the City of Lincoln.

Poker Card LSV Rally Sept 18, 2005

Yes, it was fun to be part of this group’s poker card LSV car rally on a warm and pleasant Sunday afternoon. It was a well organized rally with 22 entries.

A delicious potluck lunch was shared by 58 people, and the challenging rally followed. After the one hour’s time allotted for obtaining the clues posted at different neighborhoods/streets of Lincoln Hills, all contestants returned to the Sports Pavilion to open the sealed envelopes which contained the poker cards, to see who had obtained the highest hand.

The prize winners were: A $25 gift card to Home Depot for Larry and Karen Schurr. A $15 gift card to Home Depot for Jerry and Cheri Miller. A LSV Logo handbag won by Judy Trokey. A bottle of wine was the prize for Myron and Cece Tessler, and a bag of fresh veggies from Roger Oldenkamp’s garden won by Don and Ruth Baylis.

Dessert followed the rally, and there were some excellent choices with cakes, pies, breads and brownies to satisfy the sweetest tooth. Yummmmmmmy…….

CALIFORNIA GOLD COUNTRY

James Marshall and John Sutter changed the early development of California when Gold was discovered by James Marshall at a Coloma Valley mill site. It brought a transcontinental railroad across the nation to California, and the subsequent growth of the state as we know it today.

This was part of the story as 27 LSV Group members stood at the mill site to hear our docent (dressed as James Marshall) tell of his experience of working at the mill and his discovery of the precious Gold. It was an educational and fascinating day that unfolded for our group. We could visualize the town of Coloma come to life during the gold discovery days as he told us of the people and their difficult work. We had a short stop at the Coloma Museum, and then continued our journey to Jackson.

The stop at the Jackson Rancheria Casino was somewhat of a contrast in an educational experience! The casino had offered our group, as an incentive, $10 per person plus some coupons and was collected at the cashier’s desk inside the casino. This could be used for a lunch in one of their restaurants or at the gaming or slot machine areas. There was one person in our group who DID win at the slots!

It was back to the bus after a two hour period at the casino, and off to Sutter’s Creek where we entered the museum to see an interesting video screening of the gold discovery. It was a beautiful October day in the foothills with the Fall Season in the air, and the trees just starting to turn colors of orange, red and gold.

Did YOU know that John Sutter was the founder of ‘New Helvetia’, later named Sacramento? You learn something new every day! Our friendly and lively group had a grand time.

A DAY AT APPLE HILL, CALIFORNIA

Thursday, November 17, 2005

With an early departure from Lincoln Hills to the Apple Hill region, 34 Lincoln Hills LSV (low speed vehicle) Group members journeyed to shop, dine and view the Sierra foothills in their beautiful Fall colors. Fresh Apples of many varieties were available to purchase at the High Hill Market. Their restaurant served lunch where you could top off your meal with one of their specialties that included homemade apple pie, fritters, turnovers, apple donuts, pastries, breads and cookies. Don’t like to bake? Pies could be purchased for take home enjoyment.

Shopping at the variety of craft shops and at the fudge shop at High Hill gave you an opportunity to buy that extra Christmas present. A visit to their museum is always a treat to remind us of our early day California pioneers.

Next stop, Larson Apple Farm, for more fresh fruit shopping and their museum. It also included a trinket shop and memorabilia.

Everyone agreed that we could make a short one hour stop at the nearby discount mall, and more window and serious shopping ensued!

No excuses now if you purchased some apples to take home! We will be able to have ‘our apple a day, that keeps the doctor away!’

WALKING ON THE MOON’ SHOWING AT THE IMAX THEATER

Did you know that the Moon has a canyon that is deeper, longer and larger than our Earth Grand Canyon? 31 LSV members attended the “Walking on the Moon” film showing on January 10th and viewed this spectacular film in 3D and brought every aspect of the journey up front and center! We were face to face with the astronauts, looking right at us!

We watched theLunar Rover with two astronauts aboard drive to areas that have crevices, immense rocks, undulating plateaus and then – the Canyon!

Earth Houston’s communication with the astronauts was heard as they warned the astronauts approaching the canyon. It was at the very edge as they entered the area, and could not be viewed in the horizonscape. Had they not been warned they would have fallen down into oblivion! It was an outstanding film. One not to be missed.

Following the film, we walked across the street to the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, a renovated historical landmark, for a very short tour. Then on to the motorcoach to Old Sacramento to have lunch at one of the local restaurants. Following lunch some shopped the stores while others boarded the bus for the Towe Auto Museum for more education and history. It was a successful, eventful and happy day for all, and Gerry Lammerding did another great job in organizing it for our LSV Group members. Thanks…Gerry…

A VISIT TO THE STANFORD MANSION WITH ITS FASCINATING PAST

We could be called the ‘lucky 20’ who toured this National Landmark located in downtown Sacramento on Wednesday, March 15th. As we toured the Mansion’s rooms we heard of its history and stories of the philanthropy of the Stanford – their impact in the political, social and philanthropic scene of early California history. Their wealth and generosity resulted in the foundation of the Leland Stanford Jr. University, now known as Stanford University. Our hour long tour was conducted by an expert docent. She had fascinating stories of its background and principals that visited the Stanfords.

The elegance and good taste displayed throughout the entire Mansion with its treasured pieces of artwork, furniture, crystal chandeliers, wood marquetry and paneling, its 14 marble fireplaces, an elegance long gone; took you back to the days of early San Francisco and its pioneering families. How fortunate we are to have this National Historical Landmark to share with visitors to California, and our own Californians.

This is a ‘must see’ tour to take with friends and family. It is right in our own backyard!

Following our tour we enjoyed lunch at a nearby restaurant with friendly camaraderie dominating the scene. You missed a good one this time LSV’ers if you were not one of the ‘lucky 20’.

LSV GROUP’S 2ND ANNUAL POKER RUN RALLY AND POT LUCK LUNCH

The afternoon of Sunday, May 21 started with a tasty Pot Luck Lunch for Rally participants and then off to the contest! Even though it was an overcast day, the LSV Group members scooted along the streets of Lincoln Hills to find their ‘clues and poker cards” during the Rally. The rains came and continued, but these good sports stayed with it, and returned to see who had the best poker hand, and winners were announced and some excellent prizes were awarded. Delicious desserts awaited the contestants when they returned including cakes, pies, cookies, and cobblers - with more casual visiting time with their new and old LSV friends. This popular social event will be held again in September. Our huge THANKS to HARRY MAKER, Rally Master and his committee for creating another fun event, and to DIANE MAKER and her helpers for the pot luck lunch arrangements, that make this an outstanding event.

Annual Entry in Lincoln 4th of July Parade - 2006

The LSV Group was well represented in the 4th of July again this year. Liberty Motors, a GEM dealer in Grass Valley, loaned us the NEW e6 (a 6-passenger GEM) to drive in the parade. This is the limo of the GEMs. It was suggested that GEM should offer as an option of hot tub and wet bar.

A special THANK YOU to Dave & Karen Myers, Clint & Maxine Ritchie, Paul & Diane Kroll, Paul & Eileen Ternullo, John &Toni Como, Buzz & Bev Rognlien, Larry & Karen Schurr, Tom Zurck, Stan Olivia and Roger & Linda Oldenkamp for taking the time to decorate their LSVs, arriving early to the parade route and bringing enough candy to throw for the children along tahe parade route..

A DAY TRIP FOR THE ‘YOUNG IN HEART’

Amidst the colorful displays of candy, Jelly Belly portraits, multi-colored carpeting, posters and music, 26 LSV Group members enjoyed their factory tour of the Jelly Belly Candy Factory on Wednesday, July 12. We viewed the ‘makings’, step by step, of each little Jelly Belly, including the four robots in operation picking up the packaged boxes of candy ready for stacking and shipping. Yes, we also received yummy samples, and had the opportunity to buy lots of goodies in their gift shop. Most of us LSV’ers did quite well at the gift shop!

Between the choices of licorice, cinnamon, orange, lime, orange, raspberry, blueberry, chocolate, garlic!, strawberry, kiwi, vanilla, banana, and countless other flavors, how could one make a decision? The best way seemed to be to buy the assorted pack!

Following this tour, we traveled over to the Annhauser-Busch factory to see the processing and bottling of their various beers. There was a nice surprise for visitors, for a complimentary glass of beer was offered, as well as sodas for those who chose not have the beer – with pretzels~ With our taste buds well taken care of following these two tours, we were ready for lunch.

The Vacaville Discount Center was our stop for lunch, and everyone was free to choose what type of food you preferred. Then….shopping…..at the Discount Center!! for a short while.

With this assortment of activities, it was an educational, and learning experience – and a very tasty one too! Thank You, Barb Lammerding, for planning and conducting this fun trip. It was a good one.

FELLOWSHIP, FLOWERS, FAVORITE MELODIES AND FUN

That set the scene as 35 LSV'ers enjoyed their journey on the Sierra Railroad Wildflower Tour on Wednesday, April 19th as it departed from Oakdale. The train wound its way along the Sierra foothills and valleys. Views of wild flowers, birds, cattle grazing along the hillside, and green trees sprouting their new leaves were the sights to behold. Shortly after boarding, we were seated for a delicious lunch served in our own dining car, and soon there was a wandering minstrel playing some favorite tunes to add to the ambience and enjoyment of the rail trip. This was another five ***** event offered for our LSV Group, and we thank Gerry Lammerding and Lillian Nawman for organizing this unique trip. We will have pictures to show of the rail journey very soon, so stay tuned…..

STRAINS OF BROADWAY MUSICALS FILLED THE ROOM

Sunday, March 25th proved to be another successful and enjoyable day for the LSV Group day trippers as they visited the Towe Auto Museum in Sacramento to attend the Wurlitzer Organ Concert.

The group had lunch at one of the restaurants located along the Old Sacramento marina region.

Then off to the Towe Museum for the 2:00 PM organ concert. The melodious strains of Broadway show tunes, Big Band favorites and a heart warming patriotic crescendo of the "American Patrol" brought applause to the featured organist. The Wurlitzer Organ Concerts are always excellent and beautiful programs.

Our stop at the California State History Museum was enlightening and educational. Their special presentation, and a result of California's First Lady, Maria Shriver Schwartznegger's efforts produced "Women and the Arts", displaying outstanding women of California.

>In addition to that the "California Hall of Fame" display showcased extraordinary Californians who have made a lasting impact on history. A display case of each person's efforts showing pictures, clothing and brief description of their activity was part of the program.

Those extraordinary people were: Ronald Reagan, Cesar Chavez, Walt Disney, Amelia Earhart, Clint Eastwood, Frank Gehry, David HO, MD; Billie Jean King, John Muir, Sally Ride, PHD; Alice Walker and the Hearst and David Packard families. A very impressive display.

We had a full day of being with great friends, beautiful music, education on California's outstanding people and dining along the Sacramento River. We hope you will join us soon for one of our day trips.

A CLASSIC CAR LOVER'S JOURNEY INTO YESTERYEAR

How can you describe automobiles that are actually works of art in design, fashion, imagination, futuristic ideas and displayed in vivid colors?

The answer: You had to be one of the lucky ones to have taken this day trip to have this experience! That was the summation as 27 Lincoln Hills LSV/NEV Group members traveled to the Blackhawk Auto Museum located in Danville, California on Wednesday, April 18.

Voices expressing 'wow', and 'fantastic', were heard as a private tour docent escorted and described interesting facts and details about each automobile. The Museum building itself, is stunning with its marble floors, superior lighting on the autos, soft background music, luxurious seating for those who want to take a short break, and a contemporary atmosphere. The names of Delahaye Roadster, Corvette, Alfa Romeo, Studebaker, Rolls-Royce Phanthom VI, Buick Le Sabre, Cadillac V16 Coupe, BMW, and Deusenberg are common throughout the Collection. Spectacular craftsmanship and design innovations set the standard of quality throughout each museum 'piece' on display. There is about $230,000,000 worth of autos on display. The Blackhawk Museum also has an Automotive Research Library, containing monthly periodicals and information dating back to early 1900's. One can make an appointment to use the Library for research work.

Following the two hour tour, we boarded our bus for a most delicious Chinese lunch at Uncle Yu's Restaurant in San Ramon. It was a new 'discovery' for all of the members (except Lillian and Bob, who count it as one of their favorites in the area); and everyone expressed their satisfaction in the choice, with the quality of the food and service offered by their experienced staff as outstanding. As expected, it was a day to remember of education, fun, good food, fellowship and new discoveries. .

A PICTURE PERFECT DAY IN SAN FRANCISCO

That was the scene as 35 Lincoln Hills LSV/NEV Group day trippers disembarked at the Ferry Building located at the San Francisco Port. After journeying by bus from their home base to Vallejo, we picked up the Vallejo Ferry, enjoyed the smooth catamaran ride across the San Francisco Bay, and arrived at the Ferry Building just in time for lunch at Pier 39.

It was a clear day, gentle breezes, sunshine everywhere and the hustle and bustle of the Big City was evident. Standing on Herb Caen Drive, we watched the old streetcars pass by, people dining open air at the numerous restaurants located within the Ferry Building, joggers along the paths, and busses filled with tourists.

After being picked up by our own bus, where he had driven from Vallejo to San Francisco; we stopped at Pier 39 for lunch, and later continued on our tour to the famous Cable Car Museum.

The actual mechanism of the cable wheels and how the power drive is distributed between the four cable lines of Hyde Street, California Street, Mason Street, and Powell Street are at the Museum. Amongst memorabilia and pictures of the San Francisco Earthquake, are several original cable cars dating from the mid-1800's., plus artifacts of times long gone. It was a most enjoyable and educational visit.

Of course, after we boarded the bus for our return home, the group had to stop in Dixon at McDonald's for their chocolate sundaes and milkshakes! This is turning out to be a 'gourmet trippers group'!!! All will agree, another notch on our belt for a successful and interesting day trip for the LSV/NEV Group.

LINCOLN HILLS LSV/NEV GROUP DAY TRIP IRONSTONE VINEYARDS

The rolling hills of the Gold Country were scenic, dotted with Oaks trees, Pine and Manzanita trees, cattle and horses roaming in the pastures and meadowlands. It was a bright, sunny and comfortable day as we traveled to the very elegant Ironstone Vineyard gardens, winery, and museum with its expansive grounds located in Murphys, California.

Set in a remote area, no cost was spared to maintain this five star property. No matter where you were, the elegance and high standard of operation was evident. What a treat it was!

Our tour started with a private docent led walk of the outstanding gardens. Trees, shrubs, arbor trellis and potted plants alive with summer color, set the scene for an enjoyable and educational tour. The gardens bloom forth each season with whatever plants thrive in that particular season. The entire property and gardens were artistically designed to bring the most enjoyment to visitors.

We viewed the huge outdoor 5,000 capacity amphitheater where special concerts are held during the year; entered the caverns where the wine is being processed and stored; learned about the differences in 'corking' a bottle of wine; the differences of oak barrels, and much more. The Ironstone museum contains memorabilia of Ironstone's wine country history. The amazing Ironstone Crystalline Gold Specimen, called 'The Crown Jewel" was discovered in 1992 by the Sonora Mining Corporation mine near Jamestown. Excavations uncovered a pocket' of crystalline leaf gold. Weighing 44 pounds of gold, it is the largest specimen of crystalline gold in the world. It is on display at the Ironstone museum, and is breathtaking, and priceless in value. You've never seen anything like it!

The wine tasting was served with hors'deurs, and enjoyed by all of our group members. A different wine was poured as each hors'deurs was served. Set in a private dining area, we enjoyed our gourmet lunch in a leisurely and relaxing manner.

Our stay was far too short, and calls for another trip to enjoy the beauty and interest of this destination attraction.

Travis Air Base Museum day trip review

The Lincoln Hills LSV/NEV Group traveled to the Travis Air Base Museum on September 19 and found an excellent array of historical aircraft, during the escorted tour.  It showcased the historical Jimmy Doolittle and the Tokyo Raider flight, the Tuskegee Airmen, the Consairways story, the Berlin Airlift and the history of the Travis Air Force Base.

We had an opportunity to also view the outdoor area where bombers, fighter planes,  trainers, helicopters, rescue craft and the C-54 Skymaster in their original state were on display.  It was a patriotic, humble and proud visit to see America’s effort in keeping our country safe.

After our Museum visit we boarded the bus, had a quick lunch, and headed for the Nut Tree Shopping Center, and the train for a ‘spin’ around the property,  (and recollected days of yesteryear when we brought our kids there).  It was funnnnnnn.  Our refreshment treat after all of this was a whopping ice cream cone or dish at Fenton’s Creamery.  Mmmmmm.  A happy time was had by all, and confirmed what a special group we have.

A UNIQUE VISIT TO AN ALPACA FARM, APPLE HILL AND
                              THE THOMAS KINCADE ART GALLERY

The LSV/NEV Group traveled on October 17th to visit an original Alpaca farm located
in the Sierra foothills, and learned about their behavior, variety of color of the animals, and had a chance to touch their very soft fur.  A gift shop offered many items of alpaca for sale at very good prices.  The Sierra Foothills were especially beautiful with their Fall season shades of amber, orange, red, cranberry, lime green, emerald green, and yellow leaves on the trees.

The original Thomas Kincade Art Gallery, was on the itinerary and was outstanding.  A guide explained Kincaid’s background, his beginning in artwork, and the vastness of his enterprise throughout the USA and the world.  The gallery is 6,000 square feet and displays several original paintings, plus copies of most of his pictures.  It is an excellent place to visit, particularly if you are in the market to purchase his work.

Across the street from the Kincaid Gallery was a historical landmark, the Hangtown Tree Building, that dates back to Placerville’s early history.  A very interesting story was read to the bus passengers by Barb Lammerding  prior to viewing the building, so we could appreciate its impact on Placerville’s days of the Wild West, and the way people handled their criminals.   At one time, Placerville was called Hangtown as a result of this incident involving three citizens who broke the law.

Lunch at Apple Café, and onward to Apple Hill for a stop at High Hill Ranch and Boa Vista Apple Farm for delicious apples and other baked products to take home.

This time, our special treat on the bus on our way home was an apple donut.  It was soooo good, so next time we make a trip to Apple Hill, there will be an increased demand for apple donuts.  They are too good to pass up!  Thanks to Gerry and Barb Lammerding for their efforts in making this day trip a special day for the daytrippers.

                                         “IT’S FUN RIDING THE TRAINS”

It’s February 26, 2008 and the LSV/NEV Group was ready to enjoy another day trip as they gathered to board the bus.  With ‘great anticipation” and a little concern the 35 hearty members started out on the Day Trip which included a trip to San Francisco via bus, BART and the Capitol Corridor Train.  The t rip exceeded all day trips thus far!
(The trip sold out in one hour at the membership meeting sign up time in January).

The San Francisco weather was perfect, and our good driver Tom, drove us to Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco in record time.  Lori’s Diner was the place most of our group chose to eat and enjoyed the views and look out over the San Francisco Bay.  Of course, we HAD to have one of the big hot fudge sundaes…..WOW…..

Next, we were delivered to the Embarcadero BART Station where we zoomed under the Bay and on to Richmond for the trip to Sacramento on the Capitol Corridor train.  Tom met us at the Sacramento station and bused us back to our homes in Lincoln Hills. This might turn out as an annual event as more of our members will want to go for this adventure.  We met all the times on our itinerary to the minute!  Thanks to Gerry Lammerding, our trip coordinator, for this smooth, successful, and well planned trip.   Another feather for your ‘day trip planning cap’ Gerry.

A TOUCH OF WESTERN HISTORY, THE NOSTALGIA OF CLASSIC CARS
AND THE GRAND SOUND OF THE WURLITZER ORGAN

It’s Sunday, March 30 and another opportunity for the LSV/NEV Group Day Trippers to take off for their visit to discover what is in their ‘own backyard of Sacramento’ ; that includes a focus on education, social and cultural knowledge, that is part of our Group’s purpose for all members.

John Sutter was a man of vision, daring, adventurous,  and a polished gentleman.
As the founder of Sutter’s Fort in Sacramento he provided a free safe haven of living quarters and employment to many others with his business ventures he owned and operated in many parts of California.

The LSV/NEV Group trippers, led by trip organizer and coordinator Gerry Lammerding started their day with a visit to the Fort, and enjoyed the professional and historic commentary of the tour docents on hand.   It was a step back in time as you heard of the Donner Party and the related story of the Patty Reid Doll.  We were enlightened to see the difference between a musket and a rifle, how it was loaded, and how the statement of ‘lock, stock and barrel’ came to be as a popular Western remark.  The musket was shot in the air for us with a loud bang and cloud of smoke! One of the many perils that faced the occupants at Sutter’s Fort were the grizzly bears that were in the forests that surrounded the Fort in those days between 1839 and 1850.  We heard about the fur trappers, watched the blacksmith make horseshoes, saw the ‘cook’ making some soup over an open fire, and other stages of living at Sutter’s Fort.  For those of our LSV Group members who were unable to attend this day trip, you did miss a special day of history.

We took a lunch break in Old Town Sacramento, and headed to the Towe Auto Museum for the Wurlitzer Organ Concert.  The grand sound of tunes included ‘Around The World In 80 Days’, ‘Lolita’, ‘Lullaby of Broadway’, and a flurried finish of patriotic songs gave us opportunities to applaud loudly.

We had time to view the many autos on display from the Model T Ford to today’s car of the 21st century.  One of the notable stories and autos on display was the 12 cylinder engine Lincoln that was owned by A.P. Giannini, the founder of Bank of America.  Giannini loved the USA and California, and during the Depression felt that the soul of America had been scarred.  Unemployment was rampant and he risked $200,000 into an enormous campaign of hope and optimism entitled “Back to Good Times”, providing financial assistance throughout California in helping people with their financial needs.  The car has been stored in an old red barn in Artesia, California for many years and when discovered of its location was purchased by the B of A and had Stu Laidlaw a classic car restorer from Angels Camp restore the car in its prime condition.

The sounds of laughter and friendship filled our bus as we headed back to Lincoln Hills,
with a pocket full of gratitude and appreciation for the pioneers who formed the West, that we have now come to enjoy and called home.

"THE VIEW FROM THE SQUAW VALLEY TRAMLIFT"

It was with great aniticipation that a hearty bunch of loyal LSV Group day trippers started out on their trip Wednesday, May 7.  Chances of thunderstorms could mean the Tram would shut down, but Mother Nature was on our side, all went according to schedule.  There were some pretty puffy clouds over the area, but no thunderstorms.

We were greeted and directed by a Tram staff member before boarding the tram.  May skiers traveling up to the summit joined us, and we had a splendid ride up the face of the mountain.  At High Camp, we were welcomed by Dan of the ski and rescue patrol.  We were treated to the Museum with videos of the 1960 Winter Olympics, where the USA beat Russia in hockey for a score of 4 to 3.  We met Murphy the rescue dog and he did some of his commands for us.  He was trained to find persons buried in snow.  Very impressive!  We saw the beautiful Olympic swimming pool, spa, and ice hockey rink.  This was a first time trip for most of the group so it was a special visit.  Gerry was even treated to a snowmobile ride up to the ski patrol shack where he was presented with a unique "In Dog We Trust" T-shirt.

Our very professional LSV Group video camera man, Elliott Holden, was on location and captured scenes of the historic trip.  We look forward to viewing his movie at one of our membership meetings in the near future.  Lunch followed at restaurants of our choice in the Village.  On the way home it was the usual stop at McDonald's for ice cream treats, and another brief stop at the Strawberry Patch for fresh strawberries.  We got back in record time to our favorite stomping grounds, Sun City Lincoln Hills.  Good fun, good food, good fellowship, perfect day!

LSV/NEV GROUP DAY TRIP TO APPLE HILL, OCTOBER 28, 2008

‘Greetings’ from the day trip coordinator.  I’d like to share details about the outstanding day trip to Apple Hill and Coloma on Tuesday, October 28th.
This was our last successful day trip of the year, and one never tires of visiting the Apple Hill country.  It’s always a treat.

It was a bright, Fall day.  The trees were starting to change their colors to amber, gold, orange, cranberry tones, and as the sun glistened on the trees it enhanced our drive to the countryside even more.  As always, there is an anticipation in visiting this area, for it is ever changing with the orchards and expansion of the places to visit.

We had planned to stop in Placerville to do a bit of shopping and eat lunch; however we went to Plan “B” for we arrived early at Apple Hill and had our lunch at the High Hill Ranch.  They have good food, with specialties of apple fritters, apple pies, apple doughnuts….how could you resist these freshly made goodies, and they ‘hit the spot’.

Our next stop was Coloma where we met James Marshall, the man that found gold at the Mill in Coloma; and as our docent explained the workings of the mill and the events leading up to the discovery of gold.  There was an excellent video film at the Visitor’s Center provided for our group, and not to be missed.

Taco Bell being one of the sponsors of the World Series, had promised a free taco to every US citizen if a certain baseball play occurred during the game last Tuesday.  Well…..it did happen, so we took advantage of the offer and stopped at a Taco Bell.  You can imagine the surprise when I stepped in and said ‘we have 32 seniors and we are here to get our free tacos.’  They gladly provided them, and our day trippers also bought extra tacos plus a drink, so everyone came out on top for this stop!

I would like to thank all of you loyal day trippers for making this year a great success.  My thanks too to my helpers, Barb Lammerding, Judy Trokey and Lillian Nawman.  I would not miss a special thanks to our great bus driver, Tom, for his careful driving, and friendly manner during our trips.  A very big THANK YOU TO ALL.
